NATURAL & MAN-MADE DISASTER INFORMATION
The World Health Organization estimates that one-third of the world is well-fed, one-third is under-fed and one-third is starving.
There were 923 million hungry people in the world in 2007, an increase of 80 million since 1990, despite the fact that the world already produces enough food to feed everyone - 6 billion people - and could feed the double - 12 billion people.
* 1 person dies every second as a result of hunger - 4000 every hour - 100 000 each day - 36 million each year - 58 % of all deaths (2001-2004 estimates).
* 1 child dies every 5 seconds as a result of hunger - 700 every hour - 16 000 each day - 6 million each year - 60% of all child deaths (2002-2008 estimates).

In addition 3,800,000 - 5,400,000 died 1993-2003 in the 1st Congo War ; nearly 2,000,000 in Afghanistan 1979 to present and 1,000,000 - 3,000,000 in Iraq 2003 to present (including famine)
In 20th Century to date 80 - 250 million died from malaria ; 40 - 100 million from tuberculosis ; 26 million from AIDS and 775 in 2002-3 from SARS.
