Special Events for 2007/8

National Curry Week was started in 1998 to promote the cuisine and to raise funds for charities concentrating on hunger, malnourishment and poverty. During the week curry lovers can get out and visit their local curry houses, some of which will be staging special events and fun challenges. National Curry Week 2009 again invites curry restaurants, caterers, pubs, canteen, schools etc, all over Britain to celebrate the cuisine and culture with special dinners, record-breaking attempts, raffles, auctions and more, all in aid of contributing to the alleviation of poverty and suffering in South Asia and worldwide (register free now).

Taken from Hobson Jobson The Anglo Indian Dictionary published 1886 :

MUFTY (or Mufti)
(a) An expounder of the Mahommedan Law, the utterer of the futwa (Futwah). The Mufti is above the Kazi who carries out the judgement. (in Indian Civil Service in 18th century)
(b) A slang phrase in the British army for 'plain clothes' taken from (a) above and originally applied to the attire of dressing-gown, smoking-cap and slippers like the Oriental dress of the Mufti in Moliere's Bourgeois Gentilhomme.
Modern Times :
Mufty (or Mufti) is used for the wearing of personal clothes rather than school uniform in schools throughout Britain in order to raise funds for charity or the school.

The Organisers of National Curry Week 2009 (22-28 November) invite schools throughout Britain to hold a Mufti Day during or close to the week to raise funds for the official National Curry Week charitable fund "The Curry Tree".

THE CURRY TREE CHARITABLE FUND

We are looking for just £1 per curry fan per year. Not much but it will make all the difference both to those less fortunate than ourselves and the future of the curry industry in this country.

Proceeds will support hunger and malnourishment all over the world and the improvement of education and skills for curry house staff to help the chronic staffing problem in Britain.. To this end the organisers have created a new charitable foundation The Curry Tree whose trusttes are some of the top people in the industry. They will allocate funds annually to worthy causes and government support plans to alleviate the staffing situation.

You can join The Curry Tree and become a "Curry3". All we ask is your pledge for £1 a year and the promise to pass on participation details to at least 3 people. No money is requested at present but please send your pledge for £1 with your email and it will not be called on until National Curry Week in November 2009.
