EATING-OUT : DO YOU KNOW THE FACTS? The population of United Kingdom is approximately 60 million people of which 19% are under 16 years of age. This leaves an adult population of over 48 million of which an increasing number are 65 or over. Of these Mintel estimates that 1 in 5 eat out more than once a week or almost 10 million people who can be seen as the hard core of dining out consuming hundreds of millions of meals a year including takeaways and fast food. In the ethnic sector alone over 220 million meals are served. In UK we spend some £28bn a year on eating out or some 30% of our food spend compared with 50% in USA. If people in the hrd core eating-out brigade identified above donated just £1 a year we would have an amazing £10 million a year in the battle against hunger and malnutrition. If all the casual diners joined in we are looking at £23m a year! That is our target and we hope foodies everywhere will support us and Oxfam. For enquiries : 020 8722 8774 |
HUNGER: DO YOU KNOW THE FACTS? It is estimated that one billion people in the world suffer from hunger and malnutrition. That's roughly 100 times as many as those who actually die from these causes each year. About 24,000 people die every day from hunger or hunger-related causes. This is down from 35,000 ten years ago, and 41,000 twenty years ago. Three-fourths of the deaths are children under the age of five. Famine and wars cause about 10% of hunger deaths, although these tend to be the ones you hear about most often. The majority of hunger deaths are caused by chronic malnutrition. Families facing extreme poverty are simply unable to get enough food to eat. * ;Over 800 million people go to bed hungry each night; most of them are women and children * ;Almost 200 million children under five years of age are underweight due to a lack of food * ;Malnutrition in children causes mental retardation and physical stunting. * ;One child dies every seven seconds from hunger and related causes * ;There is enough food in the world for everyone Source:World Food Programme |
