Karan Bilimoria, CBE DL, Founder and Chief Executive of Cobra Beer, officially took his seat this week on the crossbenches of the House of Lords. As The Lord Bilimoria, of Chelsea, Karan becomes one of Britain’s youngest peers and the first ever Zoroastrian Parsi to sit in the House of Lords.

Lord Bilimoria was appointed by the Appointments Commission, a non-statutory advisory body set up by Prime Minister, Tony Blair to make recommendations for non-party-political peerages. The Commission’s remit is to find people of distinction who will bring authority and expertise to the House of Lords. The Commission recommends individuals on merit and their ability to contribute effectively to the work of the House. Seven new non-party-political peers recommended by the House of Lords Appointments Commission have been appointed this year and since the formation of the Commission in 2000, just 36 new peers have been appointed.

Cobra Beer is a truly premium beer, renowned for its extra smooth and less gassy taste.

Cobra was founded in 1989 by Karan (now Lord) Bilimoria, then aged 27 and £20,000 in debt. Karan launched Cobra when it became clear that Britain needed a smoother, less gassy lager - one that appealed to both ale drinkers and lager drinkers alike, and also complemented food. In his own words: "The beer market was dominated by harsh, gassy, Euro-fizz beers - all poor partners to food, and especially spicy foods like Indian cuisine. I wanted to produce a premium, high quality lager which would complement rather than fight against food."

Since Karan's eureka moment 18 years ago, Cobra has come a long way. The beer is now enjoyed in 50 countries worldwide, and is available across the UK in Indian restaurants, all major supermarkets, off-licenses and mainstream bars, pubs and clubs. Headquartered in London, Cobra also has offices in India and South Africa.

Cobra has also won its share of awards, including 20 Gold Medals at the 2007 Monde Selection Awards. A tribute to Cobra's commitment to quality, 2007 marked the third year in a row that Cobra won more Monde Selection Gold Medals than any other beer in the world.

For many years, Cobra has been the top choice of curry-lovers across the UK and beyond. As a proud sponsor of National Curry Week, Cobra continues to support the UK's vibrant Indian restaurant industry - and to quench the thirst of curryholics everywhere.
