  • Delicious, wholesome food is something the Thai Curry Company is passionate about. That's why the Chantra Thai range of authentic Thai food was created. But there are many people for whom the idea of rustling up a tasty meal or snack whenever they want it is a distant dream. 1 in 7 people world wide do not have access to enough food to keep them healthy and around 624,000 children die every year due to malnutrition. It's not just developing countries at the other end of the world though. There are around 4 million people in the UK who don't have access to adequate nutrition.

The Thai Curry Company is delighted to be involved with National Curry Week 2010. They are pledging to donate ½ kilogram of rice to Fare Share, a charity which provides emergency food to the vulnerable and needy in the UK, for every curry kit we sell during National Curry Week along with a cash donation of 10p to The Curry Tree charity. Joe White, founder and managing director, commented: “There are close to 1 billion people in the world who can't afford to eat enough to sustain themselves. We're hoping to be able to help in whatever way we can and make this a regular commitment for us.” Chantra Thai curry kits are available in hundreds of independent food shops around the UK and from select online retailers — see http://www.thaicurrycompany.com/ for details. The Chantra Authentic Thai Company was set up by Sheffield chemistry student, Joe White, and his Thai girlfriend (now wife), Cherry. Joe fell in love with Thailand, its people and cuisine while on climbing trips in the country and was keen to offer travellers like him the chance to savour an authentic Thai curry back home. Joe and Cherry developed the Thai curry kits based on Cherry’s family recipes for red and green curries. Showcased at the Birmingham BBC Food & Drink Show in 2009,

  • Heart Research UK supports NCW - The last week in November is National Curry Week and your tummy may be rumbling in anticipation. Spare a thought, however, for the nutritional implications of indulging in this popular dish. Curries can be high in saturated fat and salt, which are both a cause for concern for your heart and your arteries. Cooking methods and ingredients such as ghee, oil, cream, salt and fatty cuts of meats, with little or no vegetables in the sauce, can lead to raised cholesterol levels and blood pressure, therefore increasing risk of heart disease. Curries make a nutritious winter warmer and with a little tweaking can be kept heart-healthy:

  • Sweating onions in a little rapeseed oil with small quantities of coriander, turmeric, cumin, garam masala, garlic, chilli and ginger will make a good flavoursome base for your dish so you won’t need to add salt.

  • Reduce saturated fat content by choosing lean cuts of meat or try oily fish like salmon and mackerel to boost Omega 3 intake.

  • Add some colour and nutrients with vegetables such as butternut, aubergine, tomatoes, celery or spinach. You can boost the fibre too with beans and pulses.

  • Satisfy your sweet tooth by adding some dried fruit, sweet potato cubes, shredded cooking apple or pineapple chunks.

  • Ground almonds or walnuts give a rich, succulent sauce and heart-healthy fats. Accompany your dish with rice, preferably brown or go for half brown/half white. If you prefer Chappatis or Naan bread with your curry don’t coat them with butter. Remember that take-aways and curries eaten in restaurants may not be as heart-healthy, so choose a drier leaner version when possible.

  • If prepared with a little know-how, curries can be enjoyable as well as nutritious. So get those spices simmering and enjoy national curry week the heart-smart way.
